What is intestine

The intestine is a muscular tube that starts from the lower end of the human stomach to the anus. Anus is the lower opening of the digestive tract. It is also called the bowel. The longest part of the alimentary canal is the small intestine.

The small intestine lies between the stomach and the large intestine. The small intestine is so-called because its lumen diameter is smaller than that of the large intestine. Although, the length of the small intestine is longer in length than the large intestine.

Functions of small intestine are as follows:

a) Churn and mix ingested food, making it into chyme.

b) Move the food along its entire length (into the colon)

c) Mix ingested food with mucus (making it easier to move)

d) Receive digesting enzymes from the pancreas and liver (via the pancreatic and common bile ducts)

If the infection is in the small intestine, symptoms include watery diarrhea and vomiting
